Evaluations

Sex-Offense-Specific Evaluations.  We are listed providers with the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board and provide a variety of sex-offense-specific evaluations of both adults and adolescents.  All evaluations include clinical interviews, mental status examination, sexual history questionnaires, and personality testing including use of the Hare PCL-R.  Evaluations of adult and older adolescent clients also involve sexual interest testing (Abel Assessment for Sexual Interests - 2).  Specialized testing (IQ testing, projective testing) may be included as needed.  Independent polygraph examinations may or may not be requested of adult and older adolescent clients.

The evaluations include:

Post-Conviction/Pre-Sentencing Evaluations - These are standard sex-offense-specific evaluations performed to ascertain a client’s risk and treatment needs.  They include an assessment of a client’s mental status, strengths, and weaknesses. Actuarial risk assessment guidelines, including a tool developed specifically for Colorado offenders, are used to estimate a specific level of risk for each client.  Specific recommendations are made about treatment and the level of supervision and containment required to benefit the client while insuring community safety.  Evaluations pertaining to adolescent offenders also focus on the client’s developmental stage and age-appropriate needs, interactions with family members, family functioning, and safety within the family.  Special attention is also given to identifying age-typical sexual exploration behaviors in adolescents and differentiating them from more serious sex offense behaviors.

Pre-Plea Evaluations/Evaluations for Human Services Purposes - These evaluations are designed to identify patterns of feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that may signify risk in clients accused but not criminally convicted of a sexual offense.  They are similar to post-conviction/pre-sentencing evaluations except that estimates of risk and treatment needs are, by necessity, described more broadly.

Re-Assessment Evaluations - The purpose of a re-assessment or updated evaluation is to assess changes in a client’s risk over time and evaluate his/her progress, or lack of progress in treatment.  Problem areas and strengths are identified and suggestions are offered about changes that might be made in the client’s treatment or supervision that could assist the client to gain more from treatment and enhance public safety.  The evaluation includes use of the SSOTR

Colorado Parental Risk Assessments - The PRA was designed by the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board to estimate a convicted adult sex offender’s risk to offend against his/her own children. The evaluation consists of many of the same components of a standard sex-offense-evaluation as well as additional tools which are used to assess interpersonal dynamics, empathy and capacity for attachment.  A polygraph is also required.  (Please note that not all convicted adult offenders are eligible to participate in a PRA).

Colorado Sexually Violent Predator Assessments - The SVP Assessment is Colorado’s version of similar assessments in other states.  These are often conducted in conjunction with sex-offense-specific evaluations but can be conducted  independently.

Other Forensic Assessments.  More general forensic assessments include:

Risk Assessments and Threat Assessments - These evaluations are designed to estimate a client’s risk for generalized aggressive and antisocial behavior.  Attention is paid to whether a client poses a genuine threat for violence in any particular work, school, or home environment.

Competency Evaluations - These evaluations are designed to determine if a client is competent to stand trial under Colorado statutes.
