Stephen Brake, Ph.D.

Dr. Brake received a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976.  He completed a two-year post-doctoral training program at Montefiore Medical Center in New York and then was appointed Assistant Professor of Psychology, first at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York (1978-1984) and then at the New York State Psychiatric Institute (1984-1987).  Dr. Brake published several articles and chapters on the development of early learning behaviors and administered several research grant proposals prior to leaving his academic post in 1987 to practice psychology in Denver, Colorado.

Dr. Brake’s clinical practice in Denver initially focused on the diagnosis and treatment of personality disorders and evolved into a practice specializing in the assessment and treatment of violent and sexually aggressive behavior in both adults and adolescents.  Dr. Brake developed a treatment and evaluation program for adult sex offenders and directed the treatment program for several years.  The program now focuses on evaluations and assessment of adult and adolescent offenders.

Dr. Brake has 20 years experience working with adult and adolescent offenders and has conducted hundreds of assessments. He has served as clinician or consultant with the State of Colorado Division of Youth Corrections, the Adams County, Colorado, Department of Social Services, and several treatment and judicial agencies in Colorado. He has provided training to local, state, and federal agencies. Dr. Brake was one of the early members of the  Colorado Sex Offender Management Board and served on the Board for eight years.  He has published articles on sex offender treatment and is currently completing a book on sex offender evaluations.  He has been qualified as an expert witness numerous times in federal, state, and county courts.

Dr. Brake is a licensed psychologist and is listed with the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board as an approved evaluator for adult and juvenile clients.  He has also received mandatory training as a Colorado Child and Family Investigator.
